WHO are you? This is the important question you need to answer. Before you can ever hope to leverage your own abilities to help you succeed in life and in a job you need to self reflect and understand yourself first. Your personality will indicate what careers you will excel at the most which is why it is very important to understand yourself.
Utilizing the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) we can divide a person’s principle psychological functions into four distinct categories which each have two ends of a spectrum. It is of note that over 80% of the Fortune 500 Companies use the MBTI test in some way to vet potential employees. They are defined as follows:
Energy
Introvert - individuals prefer solitary activities and get exhausted by social interaction. They tend to be quite sensitive to external stimulation (e.g. sound, sight or smell) in general.
Extrovert - individuals prefer group activities and get energized by social interaction. They tend to be more enthusiastic and more easily excited than introverts.
Information Perception
Sensing - individuals are highly practical, pragmatic and down-to-earth. They tend to have strong habits and focus on what is happening or has already happened.
Intuitive - individuals are very imaginative, open-minded and curious. They prefer novelty over stability and focus on hidden meanings and future possibilities.
Decision Making Nature
Thinker - individuals focus on objectivity and rationality, prioritizing logic over emotions. They tend to hide their feelings and see efficiency as more important than cooperation.
Feeler - individuals are sensitive and emotionally expressive. They are more empathic and less competitive than Thinking types, and focus on social harmony and cooperation.
Living Your Life
Judging - individuals are decisive, thorough and highly organized. They value clarity, predictability and closure, preferring structure and planning to spontaneity.
Prospector - individuals are very good at improvising and spotting opportunities. They tend to be flexible, relaxed nonconformists who prefer keeping their options open.
An individual has a singular preference amongst each of the four categories allowing them to develop four distinct traits which separate all personalities into 16 types. The MBTI assigns each personality a four letter acronym. Find out about each of the personality types here ! (Click Here)
Determining your own personality type will help you determine more about yourself! The more you know about yourself the better you can understand your limits and what areas come more naturally to you. I am an INTP (Introverted, Intuitive, Thinker, Prospecter) which means my personality type is best suited for analytical roles, mathematics or science which would explain why I have done well in Investment Banking!
